Driven is a film told from the point of view of Jim Hoffman, who is an FBI informant. He moves to a house in California and his neighbor ends up being John DeLorean. As DeLorean is trying to make the car of his dreams he is lured into a cocaine deal by Hoffman which leads to his downfall.
The film stars Jason Sudeikis as Jim Hoffman and Lee Pace as John DeLorean. I have enjoyed all of the previous work that Jason Sudeikis has done and I think that he delivered again in this film. There was never a moment where I disliked his acting and I believe that he was the perfect fit for the lead of this film. Lee Pace also delivered a good performance, but in a different way. His character was very straightforward and didn’t really have a lot of crazy dialogue, however he found a way to still make his performance very respectable. We then had Judy Greer who played Ellen Hoffman. She had several more emotional moments in the film and she also delivered a great performance. Finally, Michael Cudlitz played Morgan Hetrick. I really enjoyed him in The Walking Dead and he had a more comedic role in this movie. He brought a lot of charm and had several laugh out loud moments with his character. Overall, the cast was very well assembled and they definitely delivered in their performances.
The main positive to this film for me was just the story that they chose. I haven’t learned much about John DeLorean previously, so it was very interesting to see his story from the perspective of the man who lured him into the cocaine deal. It was also very cool to see just what lead him to actually accept the deal in the first place. The pacing of this movie was also absolutely perfect to me. I was never bored at all and they had a nice combination of seriousness and comedy. They also added more suspense by sprinkling parts of the trial throughout the film, but never revealing too much to spoil what happens. I also heavily respected the cinematography and the craft of this film as they transformed each character and setting to fit inside the 1980’s.
I honestly don’t know what I didn’t like about this film. I thought that they did a terrific job with crafting a very interesting piece that you don’t have to know anything about to understand. I very much enjoyed watching it and I will 100% watch it again. I would recommend that everyone sees this film as it tells a very entertaining and wild story.
Rating- 9 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness.
