Unicorn Store is a Netflix original that was released on April 5, 2019 and directed by Brie Larson. I knew nothing about this movie at all going in, and honestly it was really just the colorful poster image that led me to watching it.
The story follows KIt who is living with her parents and practically just sits around all day. She gets a temp position at an office job to hope to make her parents proud and not mad at her. She starts getting these weird letters inviting her to shop at “the store”. She then goes to where it tells her and she meets the salesman who offers her what she has always wished her. The rest of the movie is then her trying to earn what she was offered in the store.
I thought that the cast in this movie had some good members, however there weren’t really any spectacular performances. Brie Larson played the main character Kit, and she did a pretty good job. I felt as if her performance was average, as there were some lackluster sequences with her. Samuel L. Jackson played the salesman and he also had a good performance. I haven’t really seen him in a role like this so I felt like he did really well with the script that he was given. Another good performance was from Mamoudou Athie playing Virgil. He was the source of a lot of the comedy in this movie and I really liked his performance. Overall, nothing too great with the cast, however it was still satisfactory.
In my opinion this was a good movie. Brie Larson did a good job of adapting this weird, and seemingly fantasy concept and making it into a somewhat real movie. There were definitely a lot of bright colors and rainbows and I think it was pulled off effectively. I liked the message it gave in that even as an adult we all have a part of our child self still in us and we need to embrace that. I never really found myself all that bored as I thought the story was intriguing. I found myself trying to make assumptions on if she was being tricked, or what crazy choice she was going to make. I think that I would recommend this to anyone who just wants to sit back and watch a pretty lighthearted story.
There were a few things in this movie that I didn’t like that much. There were a lot of dull moments where it just seemed like they were trying to move the story along. They added some parts that didn’t really have a lot of meaning to me just in order to make the story a bit longer. There is also really just a pointless aspect to this movie. There really wasn’t a point to making this movie about a girl wanting a unicorn. Sure, it was very unique, however I think that there could have been a different story that could have delivered their message more fluently.
Rating– 6.5 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness. It delivers a very childish story in a fashion that everyone can enjoy. The script and some of the cast made the movie not as good as it could have been which is pretty normal for a Netflix original movie.
